Description
In my mind, this image captures the essence of Redwood National Park, near Crescent City, California. In this one frame, you will find everything that you need to know about the redwoods forest - gigantic trees, ferns, rhododendrons (rhoadies). In this one image you can see the life cycle of a redwood, from new growth, to fallen giants, to burned trees.
Did you notice the pile of splintered wood in the bottom left corner of the image. This happens when one of the massive giants loses it grip on Mother Earth and can no longer remain upright. The massive tree crashes to the ground and parts of the trunk explodes into splinters. I was not in the forest when this tree fell but I have been less than 500 feet away when one of these giants fell. I could here the creaking of the tree and then the crashing of branches of the tree fell through the forest and then finally the huge explosion and shaking of the ground when the tree finally landed. I did not know whether to run or to try to take shelter so I did neither one.
