Desert Waves. The first light of morning ignites the tawny sand at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Death Valley National Park, California. Dragging myself out of bed long before sunrise, hiking through the soft sands in the dark, up and down the the dunes in search of the ideal composition, hoping that I calculated the direction of the rising sun correctly certainly paid off this morning as the golden light of sunrise illuminated the dunes.
Originally made as a color image and then converted to black and white to emphasize the textures, contours, light, and shadows. The black and white version drives me to a vision of ocean waves and that is where I came up with the title of Desert Waves.
Many first time visitors to Death Valley are surprised it is not covered with a sea of sand. Less than one percent of the desert is covered with dunes, yet the shadowed ripples and stark, graceful curves define "desert" in our imaginations. For dunes to exist there must be a source of...
