Ubehebe Crater (pronounced YOO-bee-HEE-bee) presented in the soft light of dusk. Almost hanging off the edge, this is looking straight down into the massive crater in the northern part of Death Valley national Park, California.
Located at the northern tip of the Cottonwood Mountains. The crater is half a mile wide and up to 777 feet deep. Ubehebe Crater was created when volcanic activity flashed ground water into steam triggering large explosions called a hydrovolcanic or phreatic eruption by geologists. Ubehebe was the last and largest in series of similar eruptions in the immediate area.
