Description
Mountain View through a window in an old mining structure in the ghost town of Alta. Alta is located in San Miguel County in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado between Telluride and Rico. During the gold rush, a few hundred people called Alta home. There was a small resurgence of life around World War II. A fire took the mill in 1948. Vandals and weather have almost completely destroyed this site but there are still enough buildings and ruins to make it worth a stop to explore this old mining town. The dirt road to Alta is accessible by 2wd vehicles so the drive is not near as hairy as the drive to Tomboy Mine on Imogene Pass.
