Desert and Forest and Ocean, Oh My! The Bisti Badlands or Bisti WIlderness Area has shown many faces over millions of years. This area was once heavily forested. Today, a petrified forest of juniper and other conifers makes the badlands even more post-apocalyptic. It’s the result of a massive storm that rushed through millions of years ago covering the forest in water and sediment.
The Bisti Badlands was also an ocean at one time. The Badlands were completely submerged by a sea called the Western Interior Seaway during the Cretaceous Period. As the water receded, layers of sandstone, mudstone, shale and other sedimentary rocks were revealed. Over time erosion has sculpted the landscape resulting in today’s dry, eerie badlands.
And let's not forget that the dinosaurs once roamed this magical landscape! Fossils—including dinosaur bones—have been found in the badlands.
My heart and passion is landscape, nature, travel, and urban photography but I am most at peace out in the field with a camera enjoying mother nature and capturing the beauty of the world around me.
